Big D’s NBA Week in Review (week 4)

Showdown(s) of the week

Mavs vs. Spurs II

Anytime these teams play it is the showdown of the week.  Check out Nate Dogg’s “Déjà vu” post for more on this thriller of a game.

Jazz vs. Kings

No lead is safe when you are playing the Utah Jazz.  They have earned their franchise best 11-1 start with a variety of come from behind victories.  One of the most exciting finishes was on Wednesday versus the Sacramento Kings.  The Kings led by 21 points half way through the 3rd quarter, yet the Jazz ended up winning the game 110-101.  How did they do that, you ask?  They simply outscored the opposing team 39-17 in the fourth quarter, on the road!  The Jazz recorded two come from behind victories the week prior, including overcoming a 16-point deficit to win in overtime versus the Phoenix Suns.

Super Star of the week – Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk has averaged 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Mavericks last five games.  Dirk and the Mavericks have turned things around after a slow start in which they lost their first four games.  Many referred to this as a hangover from losing last season in the NBA Finals.  They currently hold the NBA’s longest winning streak at nine straight including quality wins at San Antonio and at Phoenix.

Super Stat of the week  .417

The super stat of this week is .417, the win/loss percentage of the best team in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division.  The division leading New Jersey Nets are 5-7 and losers of four straight.  Hot on their heels are the Philadelphia 76ers at 5-8, a blazing 2-8 in their last 10 games.  Boston is 5-8 and going nowhere fast.  And the Raptors and the Knicks are not even on the radar, nor will they be anytime in the near future.  Who will emerge in this division as the season moves forward?  Based upon last season, the logical answer is the Nets.  However, the 76ers are the best looking bad team in the league and the Nets are the worst looking good team.  We will learn a lot on Saturday, December 2nd when the two teams face off on national television (NBA TV).

Highlight of the week – Best Dunk of the Season

Carlos Boozer has made a number of great moves in the low post in Utah this season, but the move he did not make on Wednesday night might have earned him a spot on the next Sacramento Kings team calendar.  If you stayed up for the late game versus the Jazz, you might have witnessed Kings 6’2” guard Ronnie Price drive baseline and posterize the 6’9” Utah Jazz star with probably the best dunk of this young season.

Headline of the week Bull’s coach Skiles benches Wallace

Are you sitting down?  Big Ben Wallace was benched just two minutes into the game the other night for wearing a headband and as a result breaking a team rule.  Scott Skiles, known for his strict coaching style, pulled Wallace from the game and would not reinsert him into the game until he removed it near the close of the 1st quarter.  Wallace tested Skiles one more time at the beginning of the second half by wearing the headband again and Skiles left his 60 million dollar center on the bench.  Bull’s assistant coaches took turns trying to talk Wallace into removing the headband and he finally removed the headband and returned to the game to complete a 19 minute scoreless outing with no rebounds in a loss to the 76ers.
